Introduction

With the fourth wave nearing, people are already glued to the news portals. The increasing number of cases is definitely creating a fear inside everyone. This is certainly because of the events everyone witnessed in the past three waves. Though it is understandable, it is important for people to stay mentally healthy in order to face the forthcoming wave.

What Does Anxiety Mean?

Generalized anxiety will involve too much-worrying and nervousness. This can be a personality trait of an individual. Anxiety or fear is often labeled as a negative emotion. The true fact is that emotions do not really have a positive or a negative identity. It is always the perspective that matters. There are many reasons why fear is always seen as negative energy. Here are a few reasons why it is taken in a negative way.

  • A panic attack was the reason someone did not perform well in a public meeting.

  • Fear was the cause of failure for many students because it made them forget a few answers in examinations.

  • It was the reason many brilliant students sat idle in a classroom without clearing their doubts.

  • The same fear has been the reason for many unreported cases of COVID-19.

What Can Fear Really Offer?

When an individual see the fear in the positive zone, it has indeed contributed a lot. Here are afew things to appreciate about fear.

  • Fear can help escape from a fast-chasing dog.

  • A few left out hours before an exam can make a student get more knowledge registered in your brain.

  • A hard-working man tends to earn more and settle things forfear of earning less in the future.

  • The fear of trying a new adventurous activity gives an individual more adrenaline rush.

  • It can help individuals gain knowledge and awareness of something. It can be COVID-19 too.

Why Is COVID-19 Causing Anxiety?

COVID-19 has made many people shiver with fear. Before a person is tested positive for the virus, fear is rocking them down. A person might have experienced a mild fever earlier in his life. He overcame it very easily. Now, the situation is different. A little rise in temperature is killing people with panic attacks. A study suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic in the year 2020 has caused a 25 percent to 27 percent increase in anxiety and depression cases worldwide. If individuals are not sleeping better due to the fear of getting COVID-19, they should definitely consult a doctor. Compulsively cleaning too much, organizing too much, frightening calls that all of their clothes might be infected with the virus is an indication that the person need help. Washing both the hands, vessels, and clothes infinite times a day might be a spotlight of Obsessive-compulsive disorder. Let us try to understand why people fear coronavirus.

  • It might be due to the increasing number of cases and death rates.

  • Fear of staying in an isolation room. Many do not like to be lonely and stay alone in a room. This is due to the fear of abandonment.

  • Quarantine makes a few people feel arrested and lonely. It can increase anxiety and alleviate depression.

What Are the Questions People Should Ask Themselves?

  • Are they cleaning their hands repeatedly, even in unnecessary situations?

  • Is it necessary to over-think their quarantine period?

  • Is it necessary to make lots of fearful registrations in their subconscious mind?

  • Knowing too much about the death rates and keeping it up-to-date will help?

  • Are they afraid of an ordinary cold and cough as symptoms of Coronavirus?

  • Going to bed, unsure of what can happen tomorrow? Are they questioning their future much?

  • Is the fear of lockdown causing a mental breakdown in them?

If the answer is yes to most of the questions, there are possibilities that those individuals are facing anxiety issues. In a few years, everyone has become extra-clean, washing their hands even after reading a book. When people make changes to normal lifestyle events, it should be healthy and soothing. Rather, this fast running pandemic world is becoming extraordinarily obsessed with tiny particles. This small particle could be the virus or people's fear. Both might be little, yet they can cause drastic changes. What the virus could do to the world is totally out of control for normal citizens. What people could do is combat their fear in a healthy way. Now that everyone has gained too much detail about COVID-19, they have started to stay isolated and practice better hand hygiene measures. It known that the novel virus spreads by touching the infected objects. It will be totally fine to wash the hands before and after eating, before and after touching the nose, mouth, and eyes.

What Is the Solution?

First, learn to recognize fear as the one that is making everyone gain awareness. At least people know how to protect themselves. Individuals do not need to make the ultimate changes to their lifestyle. Here are a few ideas one can follow.

Count the Blessings.

The world is a common platform for birds, animals, and other species. Humans have grabbed a major share from the earth. Having taken it with force, did humans actually give it back in return? Definitely not. Humans did a fair job of eating all varieties of animals and plants. They destroyed the forest by deforestation. They polluted the sea with plastics, the atmosphere with harmful gases. It is not empathetic to say only the fittest can survive. Now, humans are locked down, and birds are flying freely. The sky has depreciated levels of nitrous oxide and therefore, has become less polluted. There is something good happening for every effect and cause. Know to be grateful for the blessings.

Find Out the Coping Strategies:

When people are in a very relaxed state, their mind and body will remain calm. The heartbeat and pressure will be normal during this time. When people are in fear and stress, the reverse happens. To keep oneself cool, individuals should find out their own coping mechanisms. An individual should explore themselves and find out what works best for them. This is known as self-soothing. It can be achieved by a sense of smell, vision, hearing, taste, and touch. A few things one could try are:

  • Sense of smell - Baking own food that has a pleasant smell, like choco-chip cookies.

  • Sense of vision - Draw or paint a lovable picture.

  • Sense of hearing - Listen to the sounds of a water fountain or any soothing music.

  • Sense of taste - Enjoy the favorite food. Eat it slowly to experience the way it tastes.

  • Sense of touch - Take a hot or cold shower and enjoy the feeling of water contacting the skin.

A Magical Technique:

This might resemble a meditation, but it can give the instant results. Find a calm place to do this technique. Switch off the mobile phones. Keep the objects that can cause disturbances away.

  • Close both the eyes. Imagine the situation which is causing heightened fear.

  • Photograph a scene of that stressful event.

  • Turn the picture into a black and white photograph.

  • Make the photograph into any of favorite shapes (rectangle, triangle, etc.)

  • Imagine to have a paintbrush or color pencil in the hand.

  • Paint the photograph in any of the favorite color.

  • Drift away from the picture in thoughts.

  • Make it travel long distances away from oneself and feel it becoming little.

  • Burn the picture in the hottest sun.

  • One can replace the sun with dirty water or floating clouds disappearing, whatever would be feasible.

This simple visualization method can make an individual feel better. One will feel lighter and positive.

Think Rationally. One Should Stay Positive and Make Corona Negative.

Unnecessary fear will give everyone no growth. It is essential to think in a more rational and intellectual way. Be bold and confident. Remember that there are many who recovered. Listen to the stories of people who have completely recovered, and this might help to feel better. Keep a few points in mind always.

  • Get vaccinated. Ones who have got the first dose, get the second dose too. Nothing is better than prevention. If eligible for a booster dose, get the shot. Since vaccines are available for children, get them vaccinated too.

  • Wear a face mask, not a ventilator mask.

  • Avoid going out unnecessarily.

  • Wash hands rather than lives.

  • Praying is always better than complaining.

  • Do not read too much information about COVID-19 either on television or in newspapers. Try social-media detox. This helps to focus on more positive things.

  • Do not keep reading the death rates.

  • Practice social distancing.

  • Exercise regularly. Get more sound sleep.

  • Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol.

  • Get help from the public health administration.

  • Stay confident about the health. It boosts one's mind and immune system.

Conclusion:

To conclude, fear of Corona is more fatal than the actual virus. The myths and false information spread during this pandemic have the high potential to alter anyone’s mental health. Hence, it is crucial to stay positive and calm to combat this viral infection.
