What Is Bed Wetting?

Enuresis is the term used to describe the involuntary passing of urine. Bedwetting also known as nocturnal enuresis is a common problem among children above the age of five in which the child loses control of their bladder while sleeping at least twice a week.

When Is Bedwetting Considered a Problem?

Bedwetting is common before the age of 7 years and is not a major concern. This is due to the fact that before the age of 7, the child does not have control over the bladder. But, if bedwetting continues after the age of 7, it is considered a problem. In that case, parents are advised to be patient and bring about control with a change in lifestyle and bladder exercises. Sometimes, medication may be required to help reduce bedwetting.

What Are the Types of Bedwetting (Nocturnal Enuresis)?

  • Primary Enuresis - This denotes bedwetting that is present from childhood. The child is not able to control the bladder due to the delay of nervous system maturation.

  • Secondary Enuresis - This refers to bedwetting which starts again after six months of no bedwetting episodes.

  • Monosymptomatic Enuresis - This refers to bedwetting which has no other related symptoms or underlying causes.

  • Non-monosymptomatic Enuresis - This refers to bed wetting which is associated with other symptoms like incontinence (loss of bladder control) during daytime and lower urinary tract symptoms.

What Are the Causes of Bedwetting?

Generally, bedwetting occurs during the deep sleep phase in children, where they do not wake up for the call. It is more common in boys than girls having deep sleep.

Other causes for bedwetting at night time are:

  • Fluid intake at night.

  • Small bladder.

  • Constipation.

  • The bladder is irritated by the bowels.

  • Inability to know if the bladder is filled.

  • Urinary tract infection.

  • Stress and anxiety.

  • Hyperactivity in children.

  • Lack of attention.

  • Diabetes insipidus.

  • Cystitis (inflammation of the bladder).

When to Seek a Doctor?

If it is occasionally present, it is not a problem. If it prolongs for more than six months and if the child is having painful urination, consult a doctor about the problem.

- Bedwetting affects the confidence and social activity of the child.

- Guilt and embarrassment develop in the child.

- Some skin rashes may develop due to prolonged wetness in the genitalia.

What Are the Precautions to Be Taken to Avoid Bedwetting?

  • Do not give a lot of water to the child before he/she goes to bed.

  • Send the child to the toilet before going to bed daily without fail.

  • The child should sleep near the bathroom so that he/she can reach the bathroom quickly.

  • Keep towels under the child to absorb the urine while bedwetting.

  • Use bathroom alarms.

  • Avoid shaming, punishing, or blaming the child.

What Are the Alternative Treatments Options?

  1. Psychotherapy.

  2. Behavioral therapy.

  3. Reflexology.

  4. Acupuncture.

  5. Magnet therapy.

  6. Hypnosis.

  7. Fluid-absorbed diet.

Besides all this, the most important thing is understanding the child. Treating the root cause of bedwetting and being sensitive to the child’s needs may help positively in managing the condition.

How Does Homeopathy Help Bedwetting?

Homeopathy treats a person as a whole. For treating bedwetting using homeopathy, a complete awareness of the physical, mental, and emotional aspects including the medical history, sleep habits, dreams, digestion, appetite, the personality of the child, and circumstances of the child is needed. These factors provide clues to selecting the homeopathic remedy which will cure the child.

Homeopathic Remedies for Bedwetting -

Causticum -

Causticum is a commonly used homeopathic treatment for nocturnal enuresis. This remedy is used in children who

  • Involuntarily pass urine during sneezing or coughing.

  • A child who wets the bed in the first half of the sleep.

  • Children who have frequent bed-wetting episodes during cold weather but have fewer episodes of bed wetting during summer.

Kreosotum -

This remedy is useful for children who wet the bed frequently and have strong-smelling urine. This is also used when the child is in deep sleep and is not able to wake up when they feel the urge to urinate. Kreosotum also helps when the child dreams of urinating during the initial phase of sleep.

Equisetum -

This remedy is used for children who wet their bed out of habit and there is no other underlying reason. It can also be used for those who have irritation while urinating and frequently urinate both during the day and night.

Cina -

Cina is used for bedwetting in children with an underlying cause of the presence of worms. Often the child shows symptoms like irritability, rubbing the nose, and gritting teeth during sleeping.

Sepia -

Sepia is used commonly in girls who wet their beds within two hours of sleeping. The child requiring this remedy likes to be alone and remain indifferent.

Lycopodium -

Children who eat more sweets and hot drinks are often treated using lycopodium. It is used in treating bedwetting where there is passing of large quantities of urine and the urine may have red sand-like deposits in it.

Arsenicum Album -

This is used in children who are restless, anxious, and nervous and who wet the bed at midnight.

Sulphur -

This remedy is used for children who are pale, lean and have large abdomens. These children also love eating sweet and spicy food. Sulfur is also used for treating children who wet their beds during the second half of the night.

Pulsatilla -

It is commonly used for girls with early bedwetting. Other conditions in which pulsatilla is used are

  • Bedwetting after measles.

  • Burning sensation in the urethra during and after passing urine.

  • Involuntary urination on passing gas, sneezing, or coughing.

  • Other Homeopathic Remedies are as followings:

  • Benzoic acid.
  • Psorinum.
  • Medorrhinum.
  • Calcarea carb.
  • Acid-phos.
  • Verbascum thapsus.

Conclusion

Though bedwetting is a common problem, it causes many disadvantages for the child and the family. Parents may often punish or abuse the child. The child may lack self-esteem and become isolated. To prevent these negative outcomes, the parents should understand the condition and support the child in a positive manner with positive reinforcement techniques. If the problem persists it is important to consult a healthcare professional to rule out any other underlying causes and to help the child with other management techniques. Homeopathy treatment is very effective and is completely safe for treating bedwetting in children.
