About "Sinusitis"

Inflammation of the tissue lining of the sinuses because of mucus build-up is called sinusitis. This inflammation can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungus, allergies, or autoimmune reaction. Some of the symptoms are blocked nose, runny nose, congestion, cough, fever, facial pain, loss of sense of smell, halitosis, toothache, and headache. The different types of sinusitis are:

  1. Acute sinusitis – This is the most common type and lasts for up to 4 weeks.
  2. Subacute sinusitis – Here the symptoms last between 4 and 12 weeks.
  3. Chronic sinusitis – The symptoms last for a longer time or keep coming back after 12 weeks.

Chronic sinusitis needs treatment with antifungal medicines and corticosteroid sprays, or surgery.
