Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a minimally invasive sinus surgery, where the sinus ventilation is improved by enlarging the nasal drainage with the use of endoscopes. It is used to treat conditions like chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, nasal cavity tumors, and in decompression of optic nerve. This surgery aims to remove any anatomical obstruction that prevents proper nasal drainage. In this surgery, the infected material and blocked passages are flushed out, and the healthy tissue is left behind so that the nose and sinuses function normally. At the end of the procedure, the doctor uses a special device that delivers a powerful spray, which helps in washing out bacteria that causes chronic sinusitis.
