About "Tonsillitis"
An infection that results in the inflammation of tonsils is called tonsillitis. It is the most common childhood infection. The main cause is a bacterial or viral infection. The commonly seen symptoms are fever, throat pain, difficulty swallowing, and enlarged tonsils. There are three types of tonsillitis:
- Acute - It lasts from 3 to 4 days to 2 weeks, and is a severe form of tonsillitis.
- Recurrent – Here, more than 2 to 3 episodes of acute tonsillitis occur in a year.
- Chronic - The symptoms of tonsillitis like sore throat and bad breath last for a longer time.
Acute infection can be treated with the help of home remedies like gargling with warm saline water, taking rest, and taking antibiotics. Chronic and recurrent infection might need surgery to remove the tonsils (tonsillectomy).
