Bad breath or halitosis is mostly caused due to inadequate oral hygiene. Other causes are eating strong smelling food like onion and garlic, alcohol, cigarette smoking, gingivitis (gum inflammation), dry mouth, stomach problems, lung or respiratory tract infection, etc. If bad breath is due to food impaction, gingivitis, or plaque and calculus formation, get your teeth cleaned (dental scaling) by a dentist. To prevent bad breath, brush twice daily, use mouthwash, scrap and clean your tongue properly, floss regularly, and change your toothbrush every three months. If bad breath is due to an underlying illness, it is usually temporary and gets better ones you get treated for that condition.
