Dental scaling is a prophylactic procedure done to remove dental plaque and calculus deposits (tartar) from the teeth and root surface. Dental plaque is the soft yellowish-grey biofilm that adheres to the tooth surface and is mainly composed of bacteria. This plaque calcifies and forms the hard white deposits on the tooth called dental calculus. Dental plaque and calculus cause inflammation of the gums and periodontal tissues, causing infection and bone loss. Dental scaling is done using sonic and ultrasonic scalers. The vibration of the scaler tips and a steady flow of water are used to remove these deposits. It is advised to get scaling done every six months to prevent gum diseases.
