Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a type of soft tissue cancer that develops from the cells in the deeper and middle layers of the skin. It most commonly affects the skin in the torso, arms, legs, and neck. It rarely spreads to other parts of the body, but it recurs in the same place after it is removed. This cancer looks like a bruise or a scar in the beginning, but as it grows, it forms lumps near the surface of the skin. It generally affects people between age 20 and 50 years. If your dermatologist suspects this cancer, he or she might perform a biopsy to diagnose it. Surgical excision is done to treat DFSP, along with radiation therapy and targeted therapy.
