Head lice are very small insects that are seen on the scalp. They feed on the blood from the scalp. Common symptoms include itching, visible lice on scalp, and visible lice eggs on the hair shaft. The presence of head lice indicates poor personal hygiene and unclean environment. Transmission of head lice is through sharing items like hats, scarves, combs, headphones, pillows, and towels. Constant itching can cause infection. Over-the-counter shampoos and oils that contain Permethrin are used to treat a head lice infestation. If you still have head lice after OTC treatment, your doctor might prescribe medication with Benzyl alcohol, Ivermectin, Spinosad, Malathion, or Lindane.
