About "Melanoma"
Skin cancer that develops from the melanocytes, which are cells that produce skin pigments melanin, is called melanoma. It is a serious type of cancer, as the chances of it spreading to other parts of the body are more (metastasis). The factors that increase the incidence of melanoma are fair skin, more freckles and moles, light or red hair, prolonged sun exposure, and family history. The four types of melanoma are:
- Superficial spreading melanoma – Grows slowly and spreads on the surface of the skin.
- Nodular melanoma – Grows comparatively faster and turns red.
- Lentigo maligna melanoma – Grows slowly and is less dangerous than the other types. Commonly seen in older adults.
- Acral lentiginous melanoma – It is rare and occurs on the soles of the hands and feet or under the nails.
Surgical excision is the most common treatment of melanoma.
