It is a skin condition characterized by symptomless dark brownish-black pigmented patches on the skin, especially on the face. Also called as chloasma or mask of pregnancy in pregnant women. Though the cause is unclear, hormonal imbalance, stress, pregnancy, thyroid disorders, exposure to sunlight, etc., may cause it. It can be diagnosed by clinical examination, Wood's lamp examination and/or biopsy. Usually, it disappears by itself, if caused by pregnancy or birth control pills. Other options available are topical creams, chemical peels, dermabrasion, etc., which will be advised by the dermatologist.
