Inflammation of the skin around the mouth is called perioral dermatitis. It is most common in females between ages 16 and 45 years. The exact cause of perioral dermatitis is not known, but it is believed to be caused due to indiscriminate use of topical steroids. Other factors that might trigger this condition includes bacterial infections, fluoride-containing toothpaste, birth control pills, sunscreen, and rosacea. This condition causes red bumps and rashes around the mouth and nose. These bumps might be filled with pus and sometimes resemble acne. Avoid using topical steroids and steroid nasal sprays. The treatment is done with topical antibiotics and immunosuppressive creams.
