Diabetes that develops during pregnancy is called gestational diabetes. It causes high blood sugar, which can affect pregnancy or your baby’s health. Pregnant women usually get gestational diabetes in the last half of their pregnancy. The blood sugar levels can be controlled by following a healthy diet, exercising, and by taking medicines if needed. Gestational diabetes is believed to be caused due to high levels of pregnancy hormones blocking the action of insulin. The possible complications of gestational diabetes are it makes the baby grow very big, preterm birth, respiratory distress syndrome, low blood sugar at birth, and risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes later in life.
