Swine flu is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the Influenza A virus. It is a disease of pigs, which rarely gets transmitted to humans. Usually, swine flu is caused by H1N1 influenza subtype, but can also be caused by H1N2, H3N1, and H3N2 viruses. Humans can catch swine flu through direct contact with pigs. The symptoms are body aches, chills, cough, headache, sore throat, fever, and tiredness. A vaccine has been developed against the H1N1 strain of the virus to protect humans. Most people recover without any treatment, but in severe cases, drugs like adamantanes (Amantadine and Rimantadine) and drugs that inhibit the influenza neuraminidase protein (Oseltamivir and Zanamivir) are used.
