Know How a Patient’s Video Helped iCliniq’s Orthopedician to Suggest Knee Pain Management

#icliniq100hrs success story

A patient who was suffering from knee pain consulted an orthopedic surgeon on iCliniq.com. The patient had a sore knee, which pained throughout the day and was very painful at night. He got an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the knee done and attached the reports for our doctor’s reference. He wanted to know if surgical intervention (knee arthroscopy) would be required based on the attached reports. The patient was able to bend his knee, but it hurt when he walked. As the MRI showed a small tear in the meniscus, the patient wanted to know if it would heal on its own. He also enquired about using a pressure bandage and asked for suggestions to alleviate the pain.

Our orthopedic surgeon saw the attached MRI reports and informed the patient that an MRI is not always correct to decide the treatment. And the tear that was mentioned in the MRI was degenerative changes that are expected at the patient’s age and advised against getting surgery. The doctor wanted to know if the patient was able to squat completely and without pain before he could make a diagnosis and suggest treatment.

The patient uploaded a video where he explained the region of pain and various actions that triggered the pain. In the video, he demonstrated how he could squat and bend his knee without any pain. He wanted the doctor to suggest some remedies to get rid of the pain at night.

The doctor was now confident that the patient suffered from knee osteoarthritis and weakness of the extensor mechanism. But, as the mobility of the patient’s knee was very good, the problem was not at its advanced stage. He asked the patient to do ice fomentation or apply cold packs at the area of maximum pain, learn quadriceps and hamstring strengthening exercises, stationary cycling, increase the intensity of exercises gradually, and take some anti-inflammatory medications for a week regularly to alleviate the acute inflammation and pain. He suggested that the patient continues with the exercises regularly even after the pain subsides and not overdo the exercises on the first day; otherwise, the pain would increase.

The patient was glad that his condition could be managed with exercise and some home remedies and that surgery was not needed. He thanked the doctor for his help and promised to follow all the remedies suggested by iCliniq’s doctor.
