Know How iCliniq’s Endocrinologist Helped a Patient With Multiple Thyroid Nodules

#icliniq100hrs success story

A patient who had osteoporosis with a history of fragility fractures, bouts of depression, hypermobility (the ability to stretch the joints beyond the normal range of motion), multinodular goiter (multiple growths in the thyroid gland), and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (an autoimmune condition that results in underactive thyroid) consulted iCliniq's endocrinologist. The patient recently got a thyroid FNAC (fine-needle aspiration cytology) done, as he had multiple lumps in the thyroid gland and the local physician wanted to rule out thyroid cancer. The results of the FNAC read "rare benign epithelial cells insufficient for definitive diagnosis." The patient wanted our doctor to explain the report to him.

Our endocrinologist educated the patient saying that a fine-needle biopsy is usually done in thyroid nodules (lumps) to see if it is noncancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant) nodules. The cytologist needs a minimum amount of cells to give a definitive opinion. In the patient's case, the cytologist required more cells from the biopsy to provide a confirmed diagnosis. So the doctor told him that his local doctor might ask him to undergo the fine-needle aspiration cytology test again.

The patient thanked the doctor for his prompt response and asked our doctor's opinion on repeating FNAC, given his age, bone problems, and mental health.

iCliniq's endocrinologist told the patient that in thyroid patients with multiple nodules, he advises FNAC in the four biggest nodules or any nodule with suspicious features. If there are no suspicious features on the ultrasound scan and the nodules are less than 1.5 cm, he does not recommend FNAC. So the doctor said that if the patient's nodules are growing, it is better to repeat FNAC under ultrasound guidance. He reassured the patient that his age and osteoporosis would not cause any complications during the procedure.

The patient found our doctor's answer very helpful. The patient was glad that he did not have to wait over the weekend to get a response from a qualified and well-experienced doctor. He loved what iCliniq is doing for its patients and how easy it is to consult a doctor online.
