An ascites tap or abdominal paracentesis is done to drain fluid accumulated in the abdomen using a needle. In image-guided ascitic tap, the needle is guided into the body with the help of images obtained from ultrasound, CT scan, or fluoroscopy. It is done to determine the cause of ascites or to diagnose bacterial peritonitis. It is also used to relieve pressure on the lungs caused by ascites. The fluid collected is then sent for culture and sensitivity, cell count, cytology, and to check for albumin, glucose, and amylase levels.
