Inflammation of the liver that results when the immune system of the body attacks the liver cells is called autoimmune hepatitis. Genetic and environmental factors seem to play a role in triggering this disease. If left untreated, it can cause liver scarring and eventually liver failure. The symptoms seen are fatigue, abdominal pain, jaundice, enlarged liver, skin rashes, joint pain, and abnormal blood vessels on the skin. Antibody test and liver biopsy are done to diagnose this condition. The treatment is done by using medicines that lower the immune system activity like Azathioprine and Prednisone. When liver damage is extensive, liver transplantation is done.
