Bowel movements that are hard and difficult to pass is called constipation. It occurs when the colon absorbs too much water from the food that passes through it. The symptoms of constipation are stomach pain, abdominal cramps, feeling bloated, gas, nausea, and loss of appetite. Some of the factors that can cause constipation are diet lacking in fiber, physical inactivity, consuming milk, pregnancy, older people, overusing laxatives, drinking less water, and taking some medicines (antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and diuretics). Constipation is also a symptom seen in health conditions like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, diabetes, lupus, scleroderma, and patients undergoing chemotherapy. Constipation can be treated by consuming fiber-rich diet, drinking water, exercising regularly, and with the use of laxatives.
