Primary sclerosing cholangitis is a rare and chronic disease that is caused by inflammation of the bile ducts. Bile ducts carry bile, which is a digestive enzyme, from the liver to the small intestine. Inflammation of these bile ducts causes scar formation which makes the ducts hard and narrow. This disease occurs as a result of an immune system response to infection or toxins in genetically predisposed people. As it is a very slowly progressive disease, most people do not have any symptom during the early stages. Some people experience symptoms of liver disease like jaundice, itching, and abdominal pain. PSC can lead to liver failure, tumors in the bile duct or liver, or repeated infection. In advanced cases, a liver transplant is the only cure.
