About "pituitary tumor"
A mass or abnormal growth in the pituitary gland, which is a small gland present underneath the brain, is called a pituitary tumor. Pituitary glands regulate the secretion of many vital hormones in the body, and a tumor in this gland can decrease or increase the secretion of these hormones. The most common pituitary tumor is pituitary adenoma, which is noncancerous and does not spread to the nearby organs. This tumor does typically not produce any symptoms, but if it is large, then it compresses the neighboring structures and causes headaches and vision loss. Other symptoms depend on the levels of the hormone affected. Surgery is required if the tumor is pressing on the optic nerve.
