About "Trigeminal neuralgia"
Trigeminal neuralgia is a neurological disorder that affects the trigeminal nerve, which results in chronic facial pain. The two types are:
- Typical trigeminal neuralgia – It causes episodes of sudden shock-like pain on one side of the face, which lasts for a few seconds.
- Atypical trigeminal neuralgia – It causes constant burning pain, but it is less severe than the typical type.
The cause is still not clear, but it is believed to occur due to demyelination of the trigeminal nerve, or nerve compression when it exits from the base of the skull, multiple sclerosis, stroke, and trauma. Initial treatment is done with anticonvulsant medicines like Carbamazepine or Oxcarbazepine. For some severe cases, surgical options are available.
