When the activity of a drug is affected by taking another medicine is called drug interaction. The medicine can interact with another drug, food, vitamin, or essential oil. This interaction can either increase or decrease the effect of a drug, which can result in unwanted side effects. The types of drug interactions are:

 

  • Drug-drug interaction is when two drugs are taken together. For example, Aspirin and Heparin taken together might increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Drug-food interaction is when food reduces the action of a drug. Examples include consuming a high-fat diet will reduce the effectiveness of statins.
