Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a behavioral disorder that begins in childhood, where the child becomes hyperactive, inattentive, and impulsive. It is most commonly seen in children between 6 to 12 years. Genes, brain injuries, premature birth, low birthweight, and alcohol, smoking, and drug abuse during pregnancy seem to be the risk factors for ADHD. Such kids might make careless mistakes at school, overlook or miss details, often lose things, daydream, have attention problems, get easily distracted, are forgetful, and are unable to organize tasks and activities. They are always fidgeting, cannot sit in a place when expected, run or dash around in inappropriate situations, talk nonstop, and have trouble waiting for their turn. Medications like stimulants (Dexmethylphenidate, Dextroamphetamine), nonstimulants (Atomoxetine, Clonidine), and dietary supplements with omega 3 have shown to help children with ADHD. Other therapies like special education, behavior modification, psychotherapy, and social skills training are also beneficial.
