About "Sonologist"

Sonology is a relatively new term used to describe medical ultrasound, which is an imagining technique that uses sound waves (ultrasound) to produce images of the internal organs. It is used to diagnose any abnormality in the tendons, muscles, joints, blood vessels, and internal organs. It uses higher frequency sound waves that are not audible to humans. The images obtained by medical ultrasound are called sonogram. This imaging technique sends pulses of ultrasound into the body by a probe (transducer), these pulses echo off the tissues, which are then recorded and displayed as an image.

Ultrasound is used to diagnose the development of the baby in a pregnant woman’s womb, swelling, infection in the body, and to see the cause of pain. It can also be used to guide the surgeon during a biopsy, to diagnose heart problems, and asses the damage caused to the heart after a heart attack. This imagining method is considered safe as it is noninvasive and does not use ionizing radiation. It helps your physician to diagnose your condition, based on which, he or she treats you.

Advancements in ultrasound technology include 3-D ultrasound and Doppler ultrasound. In 3-D ultrasound, the data obtained by the sound waves are used to form a 3-D image of the organ. And Doppler ultrasound allows the physician to see the blood flowing in the arteries and veins in the abdomen, legs, arms, and various other body parts. Depending on the type of ultrasound, you might be asked not to eat anything for 12 hours or to drink a lot of water before the examination.
