Thoracic discs are present between the 12 thoracic vertebrae, which are made of a tough outer covering with a soft center. Herniated thoracic disc means the soft center protrudes from the disc through a tear. The symptoms are upper back pain, pain and numbness in upper back and chest, leg weakness, and chest pain. A herniated disc usually results from wear and tear as the age advances. The doctor will first suggest bed rest and painkillers. If that does not help, then you might need to undergo a surgical procedure called discectomy, where the damaged disc is removed.
