Surgery performed to treat hernia by making a small incision and by using a laparoscope is called laparoscopic hernia repair. It is a minimally invasive surgery. A laparoscope is a tube-like instrument with a camera at one end. This laparoscope is inserted through a small incision that is made near the belly button. This surgery is done under general anesthesia. During this surgery, the abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide, so that the internal structures can be viewed properly. The lining of the abdomen is cut, and a mesh is placed to cover the defects in the abdominal wall.
