Liver transplantation is when a diseased liver is replaced with a whole or partial healthy donor liver. It is done in patients suffering from liver failure or end-stage liver disease. The liver is taken from a brain or cardiac dead donor or a living donor. Chronic liver failure is commonly caused due to liver cirrhosis, that is scarring of the liver. The factors that can lead to liver cirrhosis are hepatitis B and C, alcoholic liver disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver, etc. Transplantation is also done in cases of liver cancer. During this procedure, the liver is obtained from the donor, and is replaced with the diseased liver of the recipient and the blood vessels are reconnected.
