How can I treat my abdominal pain with bloody stools?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been having abdominal pains in the upper right and sometimes lower stomach that can be burning or dull pain. I sometimes have red jelly-like chunks in my stool.

Kindly guide.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Abdominal pain in the upper right and lower abdomen, combined with red jelly-like material in the stool, is concerning because it may represent blood mixed with mucus, which is not normal and should not be ignored. Possible causes include colitis or inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids or anal fissure with mucus, intestinal infection, or, less commonly, a bleeding lesion in the colon, and a CT (computed tomography) scan can be normal in many of these conditions.

Burning or dull upper right pain can also come from the stomach or duodenum, gallbladder issues, or liver-related causes, which may need ultrasound and blood tests rather than CT alone. You should see a doctor or gastroenterologist as soon as possible for stool tests, including stool occult blood and infection panel, blood tests, including CBC (complete blood count) and inflammatory markers, and likely a colonoscopy if bleeding continues.

If the red material is true blood, urgent evaluation is important, especially if you notice weakness, dizziness, black stools, fever, or worsening pain. Until evaluated, avoid NSAIDs, alcohol, and spicy foods, drink enough fluids, and do not assume this is harmless.

I need to ask a few key questions to guide you better. Do you have diarrhea or constipation, pain during bowel movements, fever, or weight loss, and does the red jelly appear mixed within the stool or only on the surface?

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
