Hello doctor,
Whenever I lay down on my left side or put my arms on my chest, my heart makes a different sound of thumping, and I am very aware or conscious of it; the area around the chest where the heart is also hurting. When I work out my chest muscles, I wonder whether this is something I should get checked out; your advice will be highly appreciated; thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Unusual awareness of own heartbeats is called palpitations. It may occur due to various reasons such as fast heart rate (many causes), slower heart rate (many causes), irregular heart rate (many causes), being overcautious about heartbeats. Thin, lean patients can feel heartbeats, especially in a recumbent position (normal). I suggest doing these things. Avoid being overcautious about it. Do regular aerobic exercise; this will condition the heart, and the palpitations will go away over time. If you feel palpitations, just relax, count your pulse rate and assess regularity. If the rate is more than 100 bpm at rest or irregular, have an ECG (electrocardiogram). Thank you.
