Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 25 year old unmarried girl. I am curious to know about the various options for abortions (medical and surgical) and up to how many days they can be done. I tried to look online but, I got several different answers. So, I thought of asking a doctor about it. Also, I want to know how safe is emergency contraceptive pill. I have PCOD and I am on ayurvedic treatment since the last four months.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
The medical or chemical termination of pregnancy is safe and effective until 10 weeks. If it is beyond 12 weeks, surgical procedures may be required. If you take an emergency contraceptive pill within 72 hours of intercourse, there is no chance of a pregnancy. They are safe and effective. Emergency pills have side effects like early or delayed period, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort. They should be used only during an emergency, like in the case of a failure of protection or unavailability of protection. It is better to avoid taking emergency contraceptive medications frequently, as it is a hormonal pill and can cause hormonal changes, leading to irregular periods. Regarding unprotected sex, from day 1 to 10 of your cycle is the safe period. There is no chance of pregnancy as there is no ovulation happening during this period. From day 12 to 24 is the fertile period and there are high chances of pregnancy.
However, if you have a doubt then get back to me. Take care.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Thank you for replying to each and every question of mine.
One last question. If suppose I have safe sex during my fertile period, should I still take an emergency contraceptive pill or should I wait for my periods in that case?
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
No, only if you have unprotected intercourse during your unsafe or fertile period, then take an emergency contraceptive pill within 72 hours of intercourse. Then, there is no chance of a pregnancy. However, if you have any further queries or concerns you can get back to me. Take care.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I had sex on the 14th day of my menstrual cycle. We used protection (condom) and my partner ejaculated inside me (within the condom). Should I take an emergency contraceptive pill? Or should I wait for my periods? I have irregular menstrual cycle varying from 26 - 39 days. I am suffering from PCOD, and on ayurvedic pills. Please help.
Hi,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
As you have taken precautions, there is nothing to worry about. However, if you have a doubt and want to be doubly sure, then take an emergency contraceptive pill within 72 hours of intercourse then there is no chance of pregnancy.
Patient's Query
Thank you doctor,
I think I will avoid taking an emergency contraceptive pill because the condom did not rupture or slip. Also, I am personally worried about the side effects of the pill. Thank you so much doctor for your valuable advice.
Hi,
