Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I went to the doctor a couple of weeks ago because it was hard to breathe. They said it was seasonal allergies then gave me Zyrtec. Took Zyrtec for a few weeks breathing problems came back with a bad cough. I went to the doctor again they said I had a sinus infection which was causing my cough and it was just seasonal allergies again causing it hard to breathe. But now my cough is still present even though I have been taking the antibiotic for almost 10 days as it was prescribed. It is hard to breathe. I have these episodes where my chest gets tight and it is hard to breathe and then I cannot stop coughing.

Hi.

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You are having a cough and breathing difficulty for the past few weeks, you visited the doctor twice and took Zyrtec the first time and antibiotics for sinus infection for the second time, right?

I need further details are you having all these trouble in the past few weeks for the first time ever or was it already there or has it worsened just now? When are the symptoms more severe, daytime or at nights while sleeping? Do you have any fever, headaches, body pain along with cough? If yes, for how many days?

Is there any worsening of cough after lying down, taking cold foods, fruits, sweets, walking in a garden with pollinated plants, heavy activity causing sweats, or particularly after using any kind of sprays?

The Probable causes

Allergies with constant exposure to triggering substances.

Differential diagnosis

Flu. Lung infection.

Probable diagnosis

Exacerbation of allergy.

Treatment plan

If you are able to walk and talk as usual without chest tightness, then tablet Montelukast 10 mg at night for 10 days as an add on. If you can talk only in phrases, not able to walk for a few yards without catching breath, unable to lie down, visit doctor immediately.

Preventive measures

Avoid trigger causing scenarios. Dust exposure, cold foods, sweets, milk products, pollens, sprays, heavy activity, etc.

Regarding follow up

Revert with further details.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
