Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had my periods on the 14th of last month. After that, on 23, I had intercourse wherein I had used a contraceptive pill since we thought the condom broke. After 14 days, that is, on the 31st, I got my periods again. I did a urine test at home, but it showed negative. I consulted a gynecologist last day, and she had asked to do a blood test. I have attached my reports. Also, the doctor has asked me to do a scan to see if I am pregnant or not. As per the doctor's opinion, it is a chemical pregnancy. Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. On the 23rd, when you were sexually active, did you take the contraceptive pill within 24 hours? It is highly unlikely that you could have gotten pregnant if you had. The bleeding you got on the 31st could be a withdrawal bleed of the contraceptive pill you took. The contraceptive pill has a lot of side effects that are not the same for everyone. One of the main side effects is irregular bleeding. Your Beta HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) done (attachment removed to protect the patient’s identity) on the 2nd of the next month is less than 2.0, which is the non-pregnant level. So you are not pregnant at this point. Sometimes with the pill, you can have irregular bleeding on and off, which may continue until you get one normal period. Please do not take the contraceptive often. It is very high in hormones and can play havoc with your periods. If you are sexually active regularly, it is better to either use a condom or use the regular oral contraceptive pill.

Kindly revert for further queries.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you for your reply, doctor.

Yes, I was sexually active on the 23rd and had taken the pill within 72 hours. But my concern is, do I need to do sonography or any scan as my gynecologist has suggested me to do? Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

According to the report, your Beta HCG is less than 2.0 mIU/mL, which is a non-pregnant level. And you have got a period on the 31st of that month. Are you still bleeding? If it has stopped, you are not pregnant. If bleeding is still heavy with small clots or recurring, you will need to do an ultrasound to look for any products of conception. If the bleeding has stopped, then you do not need to do an ultrasound. You may or may not have irregular bleeding, a side effect of the contraceptive pill.

Thank you.
