Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have regular periods (27 to 28 days). But I am late for three days this month. I am trying to conceive, could I be pregnant? I did a test on the day my periods were due, it was negative. I repeated one today, it is negative (although I did not do it with the first pee). I do not have any symptoms of pregnancy, no implantation bleeding. Just a bitter taste in my mouth, frequent urination, and tiredness.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It is nice to hear that you are overdue and have been trying to conceive. Symptoms of pregnancy are different person to person. It is better to have serum beta hCG (blood pregnancy test) that will clearly describe your present status of pregnancy. Urine pregnancy test normally in early pregnancy is confusing as it is sometimes unable to detect pregnancy hormone in urine. The transvaginal scan will also be able to detect pregnancy clearly in 5 to 6 weeks.

In case of bleeding pain, dizziness or fainting report immediately to tertiary care hospital. If pregnancy test of blood comes positive for your satisfaction you can have another similar test after 48 hours of previous. If next level shows increase in level more than 60 % it is a normal pregnancy. If it is less than 60 % it is ectopic (alarming condition outside uterus pregnancy need immediate intervention). Periods can be delayed in case of strict diet, strenuous exercise, hormonal imbalance, thyroid abnormalities, illness, anxiety, etc. If pregnancy test comes negative wait for periods for a week. Check for menstrual irregularities in future cycles as well if present might need investigations.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

My periods have always been regular. I have also had FSH, LH, TSH and prolactin tests done. They are all normal too. Should I wait for another day and go for a blood test?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There is no problem if you do serum beta hCG now or tomorrow but try to have report exactly in numbers. They should mention beta hCG level and that you can follow with repeat test after 48 hours as I advised you before. In case of the severe pain, bleeding, dizziness or fainting you have to report to tertiary care hospital.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
