What could be the reason for not getting withdrawal bleeding or period after taking a contraceptive pill?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had my last period at the end of the last month. I had sex two days after my period and took a pill the next day. I did not have bleeding or period till now. Is this normal or should I worry about this? Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to iclinic.com

I understand your concern.

It would be better if you could send me your complete detailed history regarding menstruation. I would suggest getting a beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) to know the exact status of your pregnancy. Hormonal contraceptives can delay periods or can give unscheduled bleeding. In case of body hormonal imbalance externally induced by hormones can last regular or irregular periods and can further disturb periods. If the pregnancy test comes out to be negative, then you can take menstrual induction medicines, if the period does not come this week. For this, I would suggest, the tablet Norethisterone 10 mg daily for seven days and then waiting for one to two weeks for withdrawal bleeding. To regulate the cycle, I would suggest you have combined oral contraceptive pills for three months cyclically. Also, check for symptoms like weight gain, irregularity of cycles, and abnormal hair growth, in case you have these, I would suggest getting a transvaginal scan and blood test on the second day of menses for serum progesterone, serum testosterone, insulin, FSH (follicular stimulating hormone), LH (luteinizing hormone), thyroid function test, and prolactin. I hope this helps.

Thank you.
