Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had unprotected sex last night, and I am on the a birth control pill, as I just wanted to be safe. I am supposed to get my period this week, but I did not get my period. If I do not get it, should I be worried? Should I continue to take birth control regularly and wait till next month for my period, or should I stop taking birth control until I get my period? Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I fully understand your concern and will surely help you. I request you to please share the pill you were already taking for a better assessment of your condition? If you were taking a birth control pill (21 actives + 7 placebo types), then there was no requirement to take medicine for this. as you were anyway protected against unplanned pregnancy.

Now that you have taken it, there is bound to be the excess hormone in the body. Yes, you are correct that the pills will directly impact your menstrual pattern. You need not be worried about delay in the period, but dont take any more emergency contraceptive pills. You may continue taking the birth control pill as per your schedule, or you may stop it if you want to try that if the periods start this week. I suggest you take the pills as per the schedule. Do not worry. You are safe from pregnancy. I hope this clears your doubt.

Thank you.
