Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

What causes low MCH and MCV and high B12? Can medication and liquid vitamins cause it? I am currently on Plaquenil as a precautionary measure and have a positive ANA and high titer.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

Your MCV and MCH are hidden indicators of deficiencies in the body. Low MCH and MCV are commonly seen in iron deficiency anemia, hypothyroidism, and SLE (positive ANA). Low MCV and MCH have been seen in vitamin B12 deficiency. Since your hemoglobin is okay, low MCH and MCV are not affecting your body. You need to take a sufficient iron-rich diet and not worry much about it, as ANA positivity also impacts the same. As seen in your reports, taking excess B12 supplements leads to excess B12, irrespective of oral or liquid form. So stop B12 for some time as of now. Thirdly none of the reports point toward leukemia. Leukemia symptoms are different. So do not worry. Increase iron-rich diet and stop B12 as of now.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
