Does HIV make anal warts harder to treat?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been experiencing anal warts for approximately one year, and the condition has remained unchanged during this period.

Four months ago, I was diagnosed as HIV positive, and since that time, I have been receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART).

Please help me.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I am very sorry to learn about your medical condition, and I appreciate that you are attentive to changes in your body. Please be assured that I am here to support and care for you.

Regarding your symptoms, it appears that you have developed an opportunistic infection known as anal warts, which can occur as a complication related to HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection. May I inquire if you have a history of unprotected anal intercourse before the diagnosis of HIV?

To manage the warts, I would recommend adding the following medications to your current HIV treatment regimen:

  1. Acyclovir 800 milligrams orally twice daily for one month.

  2. Topical 0.1% Podophyllin cream applied once daily around the affected area.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further concerns or questions. You may schedule a direct appointment or follow up via chat, phone, or video consultation.

Feel free to ask if you need any more clarification or help with your questions.

Thank you.
