Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My wife is 26 weeks pregnant now. During her 20-week scan, the ultrasound showed 9 mm of lateral brain ventricle, and now 26 weeks of ultrasound is showing 11.5 mm of the lateral ventricle. So till the time of birth, can it be enlarged to more than 12 mm? So what should we do in this case? Even if it goes above 12 mm, can the baby be normal? Please tell me the solution for this. She is currently taking Levothyroxine 25 mg.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern regarding the size of the lateral ventricles.

The lateral ventricle size between 10 to 15 mm is a mild increase, so it does not need any intervention. After the baby's birth, further evaluation might be done if needed.

The only thing to be done now is serial monitoring for the ventricle's size and to look for rapid enlargement.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Do you think it might go above 15 mm before birth, and how common is it in fetuses to have this kind of issue? Can we check hydrocephalus on the baby before birth, or can it be checked after birth only? Also, according to the report, is everything fine with the baby?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There is no exact pattern for the rate of growth, hence that cannot be predicted.

There is no hydrocephalus seen on the scans (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). The head circumference and biparietal diameter are in the normal centiles.

In this scan, the growth of the baby is adequate. The liquor (amniotic fluid) is not seen in the images sent to me. But the rest of it looks normal.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
