Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My wife has mood swings all the time. She was diagnosed with anxiety and depression and was prescribed the medication Lamictal. Now she is facing the side effects of the medications. Does she require a change of medications? The doctor who we consulted said that it would be fine over time. Is it so? Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. She may have mixed anxiety and depressive disorder. Better assessments can be done if you tell me the side effects of her medications. There is non-pharmacological management for her anxiety or depression, and I suggest she follow the below guidelines to deal with it. Do regular exercises for about 30 to 45 minutes or at least go for a walk. If possible join the gym or swim, it will boost her confidence. Do meditation for 20 minutes daily, sit at one place in a comfortable position, and try to concentrate on her normal breathing, do not force herself to stop her thoughts; just let it be. It will help her to relax. Eat healthy home-cooked foods, and avoid junk foods. Drink enough water. Spend quality time with friends and family daily or do video calls if they are living away from her. Spend time on creative hobbies like reading good books, writing journals, painting, drawing, and learning new skills, language, or musical instruments. Take seven to eight hours of sleep daily. Avoid tobacco, alcohol, or any substance abuse. Give her a reason to live her life and not just spend it. Be bold and confident. Do not be afraid of anyone and stop overthinking.

I suggest you take a complete blood count, thyroid profile, vitamin B12, and vitamin D3 tests. I hope that you got your answer. Please, let me know if you want some help. Thank you.
