Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My grandmother is asthmatic and now she has developed shortness of breath and raised heartbeat on walking for the last few months. Her ECG showed some blocked vessels as per the doctor. She has been prescribed Aspirin along with Metoprolol. Are these medicines safe for asthmatics?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

Aspirin and Metoprolol are the commonly prescribed medications for people with cardiovascular issues, including those with blocked vessels. However, it is important to note that asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that affects the lungs and airways. While both Aspirin and Metoprolol are generally considered safe for most people, including those with asthma, they can occasionally cause respiratory side effects. Aspirin can irritate the lining of the lungs and cause bronchospasm in some people with asthma, leading to wheezing and breathing difficulty. Metoprolol is a beta-blocker that can also cause bronchospasm and worsen asthma symptoms in some individuals. I think Nebivolol or Carvedilol would be a better alternative.

Kindly consult a specialist, talk to them, and take medications with their consent.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
