Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

For the past few years, I have had unusual symptoms. It started with joint and stomach pain. Then, it was a lot worse times during my monthly cycle. More recently, in the past few years, I have developed an intense reaction to UV exposure. I develop a rash all over my body which used to tan very easily. I had joint pain and sensitivity to heat for a long time, but the inflammation is new. I cannot stay in the sun too long, or I will get an intense prickly rash all over my body. No matter what I do, I cannot seem to get past it. My mother has RA, so I wondered if I would have an autoimmune disorder like RA or Lupus. Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and the history provided above. These symptoms like photosensitive rash, joint pains, or Raynaud's individually do not mean anything, but they suggest an individual tendency towards autoimmune conditions if occurring together. Based on the above symptoms RA (rheumatic arthritis) or lupus is less likely. However still, symptoms can fall under a group of conditions called MCTD (mixed connective tissue disease) or UCTD (undifferentiated connective tissue disease). Sadly, there is no single test that can confirm the diagnosis and a group of tests and clinical examinations are needed to come to a definitive conclusion. It would be helpful for me if you can provide details about the following questions.

1) Which joints are painful? Did you ever notice swelling in joints?

2) Is there any fever?

3) Does the rash appear all over the body or just over sun-exposed areas?

4) Ever noticed blood in the urine or red-colored urine?

I would advise you to book a visit to a physician who can examine and get these tests done. Then, based on reports, you can take a rheumatologist's opinion. Till then better to use sunscreens with SPF (sun protection factor) above 25 to protect the skin. I also suggest you take Calcium and vitamin D supplements. Finally, if possible, get your blood tests done. I would be happy to help you further if you have any other questions.

Thank you.
