Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am taking Manasamitravadakam and Ashwagandharishta along with Indukantham kashayam and Pancatipakkinic chooranam for depression and insomnia. Should I avoid coffee when I am under ayurveda medications? How are Indukantham kashayam and Pancatipakkinic chooranam beneficial?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I just read your query.

Since you have been facing the problem of depression and insomnia, the coffee intake will also interfere with your sleep pattern. Coffee contains caffeine, which disturbs sleep. So, you should avoid it. Instead ofcoffee, you should preferably take milk at night around at least one or two hours before sleep. According to Ayurveda, milk helps in getting good sleep. In the day time, if you feel an urge to have coffee or tea, you can take herbal tea. These days, so many herbal tea formulations are available in the market. The herbal tea will decrease your urge to have coffee and soon you will get habitual of herbal tea.

If you are not willing to have herbal tea, then you can use a drink made of tulsi leaves or basil leaves, fennel, ginger, cardamom and a pinch of black pepper. You can mix all the ingredients and boil it in water and you can add sugar in it according to your taste or honey if you want to. You can take this as a tea. Soon your taste buds will start liking this tea and your coffee habit will be discontinued. The medicines that you asked me are beneficial in a number of ways. They act on multiple systems. They help you in digestion, in getting rid of different pains, etc. These will also help to keep your different organ system balanced, and hence will help to cure your basic problem. One more thing is that your BMI (body mass index) is more than normal. It should be between 18.9 to 24.5. Your BMI is 29, which mean your weight is not proportional to your height (overweight or obese). So, exercise daily as it will help you in decreasing your weight and take balanced diet. If you are not able to do exercise daily, then go for a long walk. Walking is very helpful to you. You can try yoga too. Start meditation. Meditation is extremely beneficial. It will improve your sleep and will help you in getting rid of your problem.
