Hi doctor,

My 5-week-old baby boy has stomach discomfort after feeding and occasional constipation. He cries to poo, but poo is watery. Wriggling and twisting shortly after feeding. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Most mothers wrongly believe that the baby has trouble in the stomach hearing the normal intestinal movements called peristalsis. However, as their abdominal wall is not covered with fat like adults, the normal peristaltic sounds are audible, and mothers mistake them as troublesome sounds. The peristalsis normally increases after feeding (even in adults), and mothers think of increased stomach trouble.

So burp the baby well and make him sleep on the left side. Poo will be watery until semisolids are fed from four to six months. Anxious mothers mistake all these normal newborn behaviors.

An exact diagnosis and treatment plan can be suggested after a thorough consultation.

I hope you find it helpful.

Kind regards.

Hi doctor,

I hear the sound you refer to, and I am not concerned by that, and neither is that what I wrote my query about. The baby is in clear discomfort shortly after feeding, wriggling his legs and twisting. He also tries to scratch his face in discomfort. You have to hold him to soothe him, or he cries. This issue also wakes him in the night with the same wriggling and twisting discomfort. Thanks for your response. He also makes grunting sounds. Same grunting sounds he makes when trying to poo or fart but worse. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Your baby has colicky abdominal pain. Do proper burping after each feed and make him sleep on his left.

If colic aid drops are available, it is best to give them.

Kind regards.

Hi doctor,

Thank you so much.
