Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My child is 7 weeks old, and we feed him every three to four hours during the day and five to six hours at night. While gaining weight (now 8.82 to 13.23 lbs), he vomits a lot of milk after every feed. I am worried about dehydration. His vomiting happens many times during the day. We were told we were overfeeding him, which is why he was vomiting, but with our new feeding schedule (as above), he still does it.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

As per the limited information provided, your baby is frequently vomiting but gaining weight adequately. It will help me if you can provide some more information like:

1. After how long of feeding he vomits?

2. Does he vomit immediately after feeds?

3. Does he vomit during sleep?

4. How much is the quantity of milk he vomits? Is it small, moderate, or whole ingested milk?

5. Is the vomit curdy or just regular milk?

6. Is he passing urine and motion well?

7. Are you feeding him breastfed or formula milk? If you give formula milk, how much quantity are you feeding in 24 hours?

As there are so many reasons for vomiting at this age, from simple regurgitation to some causes requiring intervention, please share all the information mentioned.

As he is gaining weight and passing a good amount of urine, do not worry about dehydration.

Meanwhile, feed him every two and a half hours to three and a half hours with a bit of a reduced amount each time (increasing the total number of feeds and reducing the amount of each feed). Burp him properly for a little longer and then put him on the bed on his right side turned and keep his head end side of the bed little raised. Continue his vitamin D drops. No need for any other medication at this point. Connect with me with all the information, and I will advise you accordingly.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
