Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have pain in my upper back that radiates to my arms for more than three months now. I also have left-sided chest pain and it spreads to the right side sometimes. I take pain killers occasionally. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Common causes of upper back pain are muscle strain. A traumatic injury can also lead to back pain. Herniated discs are more common in the lower back but may sometimes happen in the upper back too. Pinched nerve in most cases of back pain appears because of lifestyle issues, such as weak or overused muscles from repetitive behaviors.

In these cases, lifestyle changes such as regular exercise and stretching may help relieve pain.

Prevention:

It may not be possible to prevent all causes of upper back pain, but there are some easy steps people can take that may avoid some of the more common causes. These include:

1. Take regular breaks from sitting or lying down, when working at a desk to stretch, so the muscles stay loose and strong.

2. Take a few minutes to stretch the muscles or warm up the body.

3. People who lift heavy objects should avoid twisting or lifting with their back.

4. Avoid wearing heavy backpacks or purses.

5. Be conscious of posture at all times, walking upright and sitting correctly, using back supports if necessary.

6. Take warm water bath apply diclofenac gel on back.

I hope this helps.
