Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have noticed tiny white bumps on my upper lip and white spots on my hands and fingers for the past six months. What could it be? Kindly give your suggestions.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

As per the history and image provided, the white spots on your hands are called Bier's spots (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). They are benign and harmless. The white spots on your palms, arms, and legs are visible due to the pattern of blood vessels under your skin. Although Bier's spots do not require any treatment and may appear on and off, they can rarely be associated with anemia, lichen planus (an auto-immune condition that causes skin lesions with thick dry scales), hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating of palms and soles in particular), and so on. But, again, as I have mentioned, these are very rare, and you may need to undergo blood tests to rule out anemia and to check for changes in the blood parameters. A complete blood count (CBC) with hemoglobin (Hb) needs to be done for the same. As for the white bumps on your lips, the images of the lesions were not provided, along with the history. But, from your description, it seems to be Fordyce spots that appear as tiny white raised lesions on the lips and other mucosal areas, which do not cause any symptoms but may be of cosmetic concern. They are produced due to oil or sebum secretions on the mucosal regions of your body, like lips, inside the mouth, and female genitalia. They are harmless and do not usually require any treatment. If the appearance is bothersome, however, there are laser treatments to reduce its appearance, and may require in-person consultation with a specialist for the same. I hope this was helpful. Thanks and regards.
