Hello doctor,

My dad has been suffering from bipolar disorder for the past 20 years and has also experienced three to four heart attacks as the medicines were not provided for him on time. I think the last time he had an attack before ten years ago. We have been giving him Olanzapine. Unfortunately, he has developed symptoms of chicken pox recently. Is it safe to continue the medicine? Or will it have any adverse effect. If we skip giving them the medicine, they may not sleep during the night. In addition, he may suffer from a heart attack if not given for three to four days. He does not take medicines on his own. So we usually give it by mixing it with tea etc.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I have gone through the problem and understand your concern. Yes, it is safe to give Olanzapine during chicken pox. However, simultaneously take care of pox and tell your treating doctor that your father is on Olanzapine so that he does not prescribe any drug that has drug interactions with Olanzapine. Otherwise, it is quite safe to keep continuing your father's drugs.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.

Hello doctor,

He is taking homeopathy medicine for the treatment of chicken pox. But, unfortunately, I do not think homeopathic medicine will react with Olanzapine, or it can.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

Yes, most probably. If he has a fever, then Paracetamol can be used. Only hold Olanzapine if he has a high-grade fever and becomes confused. Otherwise, Olanzapine can be continued without much concern.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.

Hello doctor,

He got some homeopathy medicine for the chicken pox. Can it have any adverse effect?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

Homeopathy medicine usually does not cause any interactions with the drug Olanzapine, so do not worry excessively. As you mentioned, Aspirin or other drugs that affect the liver can cause liver toxicity, but not in the case with Olanzapine. Hold Olanzapine only if your father becomes sedated or has a high-grade fever. Otherwise, this drug can be continued.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.

Hello doctor,

Ok sure. And for how much time to withhold? One or two days?

Kindly help.
