Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had sex with my husband using a condom. But I doubt if the condom leaked and now it has been more than 12 hours. I have taken the a combination of Ethinylestradiol and Gestodene birth control pill as ECP is not available in the place where I stay. Should I take more than one pill to avoid pregnancy? And is it okay to take another pill after a gap of a few hours? Will I get my period at the regular time after taking these pills? We did not have sex on my fertility day. How long should I take these pills? Will there be any side effects as I am taking such tablets for the first time? And what would be the emergency cases in which I should go to a doctor?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

You have mentioned that you are taking a combined contraceptive pill. If you are taking these medications properly then you do not need emergency contraceptives. As you are already on contraceptives and had sex in a non-fertile period there is no need to take emergency pills. Emergency pills combined with regular contraceptive pills can cause irregular cycles and unscheduled bleeding. Further, you may have irregular cycles for some time if not on regular oral contraceptive pills. After the i-Pill, you will have withdrawal bleeding. So it is better not to use emergency pills.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
