Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I took combination pills without taking any breaks for three months consecutively. However, I had breakthrough bleeding, so I discontinued the pill and let my uterus bleed for seven days. On the fifth day of my period, I had unprotected sex. Can I get pregnant?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

As per your description, these symptoms could be due to hormonal imbalances caused by birth control pills. Once you stop the pill, the usual period resumes within a month, but sometimes it may take time to resume the menstrual cycle depending upon how long you are on the pill and the type of pill. If you are taking your pills on a regular basis, I suggest there is almost no chance of pregnancy in your case. However, if you left your active pills and did intercourse, then there is a chance of pregnancy in that case. So, I suggest you drink a lot of warm water, eat a soft diet, and make the lifestyle changes that are required in your case.

I hope this has helped you.

Thanks and regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for your reply.

I took the pills for three consecutive months. However, only a few pills were remaining when I took a break for seven days. On the fifth day, I had unprotected sex. Will that put me at risk of getting pregnant?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

If you take birth control pills regularly without missing any active pills, there is no chance of pregnancy in that case. But as you left your three active pills and did unprotected sex, there is a chance of pregnancy in your case. So, I suggest you wait and watch for your menstrual cycle and get your blood beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) levels checked after 16 days of your missed period date.

I hope this has helped you.

Thanks and regards.
